"Without my lands, my farmers are nothing. Without my farmers, my lands are nothing."
Farmers are generally responsible for raising crops and/or animals. Also called ranching, breeding, or husbandry, the practice of domesticating animals for human use was first developed in the Fertile Crescent in ancient times, and it in large part made civilization possible.
Seeing how there are no plants in Villages, the Farmer allows you to add animals to your village, providing you with a few extra cards and strategies.
In previous versions of Villages, a Farmer was called a Breeder and had different artwork. Because the name Breeder has a certain unsavory connotation, the name was changed for the 4th edition.
If you don't have a good way to protect your Farmer, avoid placing him. He'll be a target for anyone with an animal in-hand and the corresponding color. Because there is one of each color, he's a good card to have. But if you don't have any animals, you might want to discard it to avoid paying for him at the end.
Alternate Art (Kickstarter Exclusive)Edit
The alternate artwork loosely resembles the player character in the Harvest Moon video game series, minus his iconic blue cap.
The alternate artwork is found on the Orange, Blue, and Purple Farmer cards.
