As the old story goes, Stingy Jack trapped the Devil with a cross, only letting him free when he promised to never take Jack's soul. Jack was too sinful to go to heaven, but his deal with the Devil made it so he couldn't go to hell, either. Instead Jack took an ember from hell and placed it in a turnip, cursed to wander the earth forever to look for a resting place, making him Jack o' the Lantern.
He is also portrayed as King of the Pumpkin Patch in the Nightmare Before Christmas, and as a pumpkin-headed prankster in The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy.
