Paladins are holy knights, originating as the twelve Paladins of Charlemagne's court. They were later popularized in role-playing games as a character class. They are sworn to righteousness (Lawful Good behavior) and are imbued with divine powers to smite evil. And the undead.
It's likely the artwork was influenced by the video game Warcraft III, where Paladins wield hammers in battle. Earlier versions of the artwork also included long blond hair, suggesting a relation to Arthas, the Paladin prince of Lordaeron. It is unclear why this was changed, but it may have something to do with Arthas' later corruption.
Paladins were originally a part of the base deck, as super-Knights with an additional power. The creator moved them to Ghost Town to give them a different ability and strength.
In 4th edition, the Paladin's holy might comes crashing down on the Dark units.
