After a corpse has decayed, what remains are their bones, which can survive for millennia. While it would be technically impossible for a skeleton to move on its own, since it has no muscles or even ligaments, living skeletons are nothing new to fantasy. Necromancers are usually the ones to work their magic on the bones to reanimate the dead. Since they're already dead, they cannot die again, and will put themselves back together if knocked apart. The best way to destroy such creatures is with some kind of incendiary, like a bomb.
In the 3rd edition of Villages, the Skeleton's ability allowed him to return to the player's hand if he lost a battle. This was changed for 4th edition.
These creatures are fallen Knights, good at defending and even better at being dead.
